Associated with  Chicago

Description

When: Tuesday, January 13, 2026 from 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM CT

Where: Virtual

Details:

This webinar will provide a discussion of FM Approvals and its role in roof system design and compliance. Participants will learn to distinguish between FM certification standards, including FM 4470 and FM 4474, and review FM test methods for fire, wind uplift, and hail resistance. We will review how to navigate RoofNav requirements and understand common pitfalls and misinterpretations. We will highlight common over-design concerns with wind loads and compare ASCE 7 to IBC provisions and how that impacts the roof design. We will also explore alternative compliance pathways such as UL 1897 and UL 1256, identify gaps in building codes, and if time permits, review FM Loss Prevention Data Sheets relevant to roof deck securement, hail damage, and field verification of wind uplift resistance.

Learning objectives:

    1. Understand FM Approvals and its impact on roof system design:  Explain the role of FM Approvals in roofing compliance and design standards.
    2. Differentiate FM certification standards and test methods:  Identify key differences between FM 4470 and FM 4474 and an overview of FM test protocols for fire, wind uplift, and hail resistance.
    3. Use of RoofNav:  Demonstrate how to use RoofNav effectively and recognize common pitfalls and misinterpretations in roof system approvals.
    4. Evaluate alternative compliance pathways and code gaps:  Compare FM requirements with ASCE 7 and IBC provisions, explore UL 1897 and UL 1256 as alternatives, and identify areas not addressed by building codes.
